Have you ever dreamed of saying "I do" amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Dolomites? If you're considering an elopement that truly takes your breath away.. then this guide is for you! We'll walk you through everything you need to know to elope in the Dolomites, from legal requirements to making sure you’re set up for success for the dreamiest day.

Why the Dolomites?

The Dolomites, a mountain range in northeastern Italy, offer an unparalleled setting for an intimate and memorable elopement. Imagine exchanging vows as the sun sets over craggy peaks, or sharing your first kiss as a married couple in a secluded alpine meadow. The Dolomites provide not just a stunning backdrop, but also a sense of solitude and connection with nature that's hard to find elsewhere. I couldn’t believe how dreamy our time was in the Dolomites - it’s hard to compete with these locations for your your elopement.

Legal Requirements for Eloping in the Dolomites

Before we get to the fun part, let's talk about the nitty-gritty. Eloping in a foreign country comes with its own set of legal requirements. In Italy, you'll need:

Documentation

  1. Valid Passports

    • Ensure both passports are valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay.

  2. Birth Certificates

    • Obtain original or certified copies of both birth certificates.

  3. Affidavit (Atto Notorio)

    • Sworn before a U.S. Consul in Italy or a notary public in your home country, stating that there's no legal obstacle to your marriage. Sadly, LGBTQIA+ marriages are illegal in Italy so I always suggest my queer couples tie the knot legally in the U.S. and celebrate in the Dolomites!

  4. Nulla Osta

    • Certificate of No Impediment, confirming you're free to marry. This is usually obtained from your home country's embassy in Italy.

  5. Translator

    • If your documents are not in Italian, you'll need them translated and certified.

  6. Witnesses

    • Italian law requires two witnesses for a civil ceremony.

  7. Filing of Banns

    • Some regions require the public posting of marriage banns; check local requirements.

Legal Procedures

  1. Appointment with Local Officials

    • Schedule an appointment to submit your documents and confirm eligibility to marry.

  2. Civil Ceremony Booking

    • Book the date, time, and location for your civil ceremony if you're not opting for a symbolic ceremony.

  3. Payment of Fees

    • Pay any administrative fees required for the marriage license and ceremony.
